Update

Ok, a really quick update...

On Friday we left at 6 am. I had only two hours of sleep, yeah for being sick :/ We got to the city, went through registration, and ate breakfast at the convention center (hotel). We felt really ritzy because we were drinking orange juice from wine glasses. Then we went to the morning sessions. We sat in the front row and scored bonus points with the speaker. He came over and spoke to us before the session then mentioned us as "his new friends" while he was speaking. We learned about stronger story telling in the news and ethics in news editing. The speaker, Al Tompkin's was great.

Then we had lunch. It was fancy smancy. There were servers and 3 forks and all that stuff :) Then after lunch was the awards ceremony and my university won 2nd and 3rd in scriptwriting! I'm going to try to enter something next year. Afterward I spoke with an important lady from the news station that I ReaLLY want to intern at and she said I should just email my resume straight to her!

On the way back we stopped at the OKC bombing memorial because one of the girls with us and never been there before and she really wanted to go. We got back at about 5:30. I ate dinner and was asleep by 8 and slept until noon the next day :) Woot woot! And I guess that's about it for now...except for the pictures...

Flashback Friday...13

Today's Flashback Friday doesn't flash that far back...here's the deal, in 5 hours (6 a.m.) I along with 4 other students and our sponsor will be headed to the city for a broadcast convention! That probably sounds kind of lame to most, but everybody who's anybody in Oklahoma broadcasting will be there. Time to make connections!

My two photos for today are from the two times I got to visit the KOTV news station. The first time was right after my senior year when I got to job shadow Craig Day for the day.

The second is from when I got to record a mock newscast with Craig Day for a video my dad was doing for church about 2 years ago.

And yes I do own more then one jacket...I just happen to wear the same one all the time. But I did get a new suit last week so I will be wearing it today and looking all professional...and now I'm going to sleep...

What is fashionable??

Tonight I was reading in the Daily Walk Bible and the last part of the My Daily Walk section said:

When sin is fashionable Christians should be out of fashion.

I've been thinking a lot about fashion lately, mainly about making my own clothes. I don't always go with what is fashionable or in-style. I like to have my own style, but not stick out too far. I had actually just finished working on my motor jacket when I began reading my Bible. (Pics to come of the jacket.)

So when I read that sentence relating a walk with God to fashion it made sense to me. We don't need to fit in and conform to everyone else, we just have to live our lives for Him, no matter how unfashionable or un-cool other people may think we are. I'm going to try even harder to make sure I'm not just doing what others are doing because it's easy or in-style...and no this doesn't mean I'm going to loss all my cool fashion sense :)

Time to DYE!

Yesterday my mom and I did some dying. I got the inspiration from the Treadbanger video about Sweeney Todd. I dyed a white skirt that I got at a garage sale last fall. I used wine color rit dye and it came out beautifully! I liked it so much that I tie dyed a grey shirt in it and dyed a pair of my white gloves from marching band and a scrap of flowered fabric my mom let me have. I absolutely LoVe the color everything turned out! We were very impressed with the fact that the skirt's zipper even got dyed, so now it's a really pretty magenta as well.

The clothes were all wet in my pictures and there's not one of the gloves, but you can get the general idea of what it looks like. I plan on wearing the skirt to the Medieval Faire with a corset I made. I'm also hoping to re-con a shirt to go with it with this tutorial. The gloves would look really cute if I ever had a need to dress up Victorian for any occasion...but then I would probably have to make an entire dress, so that can wait a looong time.

Without further ado, here are the pictures

Business/Party

It is often said that a mullet is "business in the front, party in the back." My first memory of the mullet was Uncle Jesse (John Stamos) in Full House. I think he was my generations first crush.

*sigh* Umm...anyway, now on to the real point on this message...last Saturday night I fancied up a jacket. The front is all business...

But now there's a party in the back...so to speak...

I managed to make the wings with about 175 safety pins and this tutorial from Instructables.

Flashback Friday...12

I'm running late on my Flashback Friday post, but here it is...

From left to right- me, Stephanie, Sally, and Danielle

This picture is from our high school band trip to New Orleans on New Years on 2002, when we got to play at the halftime show at the Sugar Bowl. We were on a riverboat when we took this picture and we ended up getting wet and then freezing cold. The reason I chose this photo is that I'm going to hang out with Sally and Danielle in about 10 minutes! We're all on Spring Break so we're going to have a girl's night out! So I'm off to be with friends :)

Won't You Wear a Sweater??

I don't know about the rest of you, but I grew up watching Mr. Rogers. He is the iconic educator, minister, songwriter, and television host that many have grown to love. He hosted the widely popular show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood from 1968-2001, making it the longest running program on PBS. Mr. Rogers is most remembered for his sneakers and his sweater. Which by the way, all his sweaters were hand knitted by his mother...

Not only did Mr. Rogers have his daily half-hour television show, but he also did many other things to promote education. He pushed for the use of VHS tapes instead of Beta because VCRs can record things off the television onto a VHS tape. "Why," you might say did he care...because he wanted parents and children to be able to tape his show along with other educational programs so they could sit down as a family and learn together. (My media ethics and law teacher actually told this to the class last week.)

Mr. Rogers also fought for funding to the Corporation of Public Broadcasting when Nixon wanted to cut it in half. While growing up and watching PBS, before each show an announcer would say"...... is brought to you by ........ and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and by contributions to your PBS station from viewers like you, thank you." It wasn't until recently that I really began to understand what all of that meant until recently, but I've realized that without that funding I would have missed out on a lot of educational shows, such as Wishbone. I was one of the few students in freshman English in high school who understood The Odyssey and I owe it all to Wishbone and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting!

Ok, so I'm getting a little off topic. I found this video some had posted on facebook that shows Mr. Rogers presenting his case to the U.S. Senate.

I'm saying all of that to say this. Mr. Rogers is one cool guy and today, March 20, 2008, would be his eightieth birthday. So in honor of him, the people behind Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood are asking everyone to wear a sweater today. So I don't know what the weather is like in your neighborhood today, but if you appreciate Mr. Rogers and all the things he did over the years for education and public television then please wear a sweater today for him.

"You've made this day a special day by just your being you." ~Mr. Rogers

A lovely Sunday afternoon

This afternoon my parents and I were outside doing some work around the yard. We were burning some tree limbs, clearing out the space for the new house! Then all of a sudden HUNDREDS of birds started chirping and it sounded just like a scene from Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. Then all those HUNDREDS of birds started flying through the air. There were blacks spots all over the sky. I ran inside and grabbed my camera (which I knew I should have taken outside with me in the first place). And I managed to get one good photo of some of the last few birds migrating south.

Umm...odd question...

So I'm curious if anyone out there drinks Session beer. I had never heard of it until tonight when I got wind that the bottle caps have neat pictures on them. I have some ideas for crafts involving the session beer caps similar to the ones below. Since I don't drink there is no chance that I will get any of them. But if any of ya'll run across any of these caps please let me know because I really want them, and spread the word to your friends! Thanks for any help you can give :)

Flashback Friday...11

This Friday I chose a fun photo from Halloween of '99.

From left to right: me, age 12, a poodle skirt gal, my sis, age 15, Pippi Longstocking, my friend Melissa, age 13, another poodle skirt gal.

We were headed off to my church for the Fall Festival. We had a blast! (...and we look sooo dorky!)

*Sorry this post is so late :/

Sewing StoryTime

I have a fun sewing story for today!

On Friday my friend and I went shopping for some cheap shirts to do some practice sewing with. So Friday night I showed Bailey how to make a skirt from two shirts.

While on the shopping trip I found a XL black t-shirt for $1! Last night I decided to use it to make a jumper from the pattern I've been eyeing for quite some time. I had a bit of a mishap when it said to cut a 18" by 21" rectangle and I ended up getting it turned sideways...but I managed to fix it with some added side panels. So after about 3 to 3.5 hours I ended up with this.

Then today I got to the scene shop to work my usual 3 hours and I was telling Theo, the professor over the scene shop, that I made my jumper last night and that I'm a "wizard sewer." (I may have exaggerated a little with that statement...) Theo said, "That’s awesome, we're going to do some sewing today." I figured he was kidding because since when is there sewing when building sets?? But he was totally serious and I ended up sewing two forty foot sections of canvas together to make what is supposed to look like a circus tent. Then I sewed a so called pocket on it...a place where a rod can be inserted. So in the end I sewed nearly 80 feet of canvas...Woah!

Here are some pics I took as we were getting started. Cassie got us going then I took over right after the photo was taken.

A new type of picture

This weekend I saw a post about making pictures on pencils (yes on not with). I checked out the tutorial and just had to try it myself. So here's mine.

Flashback Friday...10

Thursday was cold and laundry day...this means the only clean long sleeved shirts are Christmas shirts. For that reason I wore a Silver Dollar City Christmas shirt to classes. Then as I was going through my old photos I found a picture of me and Santa- I feel like since I was Christmasy yesterday I can be Christmasy today.

I'm not sure how old I was in this photo, probably in the neighborhood of 5-7. But all I've got to say is I had it going on! I was rockin' that pink thingamabob and I love the Mickey sweatshirt (I still love Mickey and am reading Walt Disney's Biography right now!) Is it sad that every time I type Mickey I have to sing the song in my head to spell it right?? And my spellchecker actually told me that thingamabob is a real word!

So anyway...me and Santa, we're best buds!

It's official...

...he passed!

I can finally stop praying the same prayer I've been praying for the last month that everything will go good and that Kevin will do the very best that he possibly can.

Tonight (Thursday) was Kevin's senior recital, and he did a great job! Friends, family, and classmates all came out to see Kevin perform. The president of the university even came to the recital- he comes to almost all of the stuff on campus and it really means a lot to us! I was so proud and I'm not ashamed to admit that I totally teared up during the first song...anyway, he did so great and looked very handsome by the way. And I took a lot of pictures...

We were both so nervous earlier today. All we could do to make it better was try to laugh. At one point I found a copy of the program and I turned to him with the most in awe face and said, "can I have your autograph?!?" He laughed at me :) but I really did get it later as a joke.

Afterwards there was a reception where we had Reese's, chips and salsa, and cake That's what he asked for...(it wasn't just any chips and salsa, it was from his favorite restaurant). When Kevin walked into the reception m friend Katie turned to me and said that I was beaming with pride! The funny thing was I didn't even realize that I was smiling :)

Ok, I've tried to put what I'm feeling into words and it's just not working...I'm not conveying it very well. So here's the gist of it: Kevin did amazing, I'm proud beyond words, we're glad that it's over with now, I'm proud of him, it was fun getting to hang out with friends and family, and did I mention that I'm ReaLLY stinkin' proud of Kevin?!?

Also known as Uncle Kevy :)

Yeah for us!

My newest addiction

During my freshman year of college I started watching One Tree Hill even though it was already the third season. After the school year was over I just stopped watching it. Then my dad told me about the fast forward four years that they are doing this season and I thought "wow, that will be a flop." But I just had to check it out...and I was surprisingly wrong. I like the new plot line because the characters are the age I am now and I can relate to them more, plus they can escape the high school drama. I say all that to say this...now that I've started watching One Tree Hill again I'm realizing how little I know about the original core story line, so I searched the internet over and found ALL of the episodes online (minus a couple here and there). So I've started at the beginning and am going to watch all of them.

Today's to-do list:

Media Ethics and Law Test- 9:30 blah
Radio Interview- 11:00 lame
Hang signs for Kevin's senior recital- every time I enter a different building
Broadcast Class- 1:00
Work in scene shop 2-5
Pick up my replacement lappy- 5:30
Honor Society Induction- 7:00
Watch the latest One Tree Hill- 8:00 if I get the chance
Go to Kevin's senior recital rehearsal- 9:00

Hoping there's enough snow for a snow day- all day long :)

Lawrence Welk and Quilts

So what kind of time was it when the young ladies would stay in on Saturday night watching the Lawrence Welk show and sewing on a quilt??

Could it be the "good ol' days" of times gone by?? The time when the mom would set the little girls' hair in rag curls for Sunday morning?? When mom made the cakes from scratch?? The whole family sat down for a friendly game of monopoly??

Well...I'm talking about myself. I'm the young lady staying in on Saturday night watching The Lawrence Welk Show and quilting. Yeah I know...I'm kinda lame and in the wrong era. But that's okay, I like it :)
