Long Overdue

Mary Ann posted this awhile back and I'm just now getting around to doing it...

The official rules declare that I must:
-Link to the person who tagged me (see above)
-Mention the rules (hello, this is rules)
-Reveal six quirky yet boring, mundane, banal and pedestrian facts about yourself
-Tag six other bloggers by linking to them (you're tagged...yep, you)
-Go to each of their blogs and leave a message letting them know they've been tagged!

Here goes:
-I planted some seeds in kindergarten and they grew into two trees (some kind of citrus). The trees have resided in the living room, mom and dad's room, and now in the laundry room.
-I like black furniture. My room now has a black nightstand, a black chair, black dresser, black bookcase, and a black fan.
-I'm currently collecting pieces about snow for my oral interpretation class (got any suggestions??)
-I've been keeping a "books to read" list since 2006 and there are hundreds of books on it
-When I worked for the library I checked out the Schoolhouse Rock DVDs and watched every single Schoolhouse Rock episode ever made and behind the scenes stuff
-I started my Christmas shopping in mid-October

Well, there you go...if you make your own list then let me know so I can read more about you :)

Happy Thanksgiving!

My family had a fun day today. I got up at 8am and watched the parade on CBS & NBC- dozing off once in a while. We had dinner. Pestered sis's dog a little, played some guitar hero, watched Daniel Boone, moved my bookcase in from the garage where dad was painting it.

We were going to play the Friends trivia game this evening, but couldn't find it. So I ended up hanging out in the game room listening to some of my "new" records. Then I broke out mom and dad's old country 45s. Now I'm listening to my favorite record ever! It's one that belonged to my dad when he was little. It's Huckleberry Hound- The Great Kellogg's TV Show record. It came out in 1959. It has three stories on it and all the characters are played by only two guys.

I've always been a hands-on kid, and I dreamed of building a train like the one on the record sleeve. I had a couple of wheels and axles off an old wagon and I nailed then onto a piece of plywood to try to make a train car, but it didn't turn out very well...oh well, I spent lots of afternoons staying out of trouble thinking about my train!

Added later- tonight I put my books in my bookcase for the first time since the move!

When I was little I would pull all my books off the shelves and reorganize by title, author, type, etc. just for fun. Tonight I pulled out my books, three boxes, and realized that a lot of my paperbacks were gone...not the Christan romances still in the old house or the books in the two tubs in the storage building, or the 30 or so at school...so I looked around my room and found a fourth box :) I decided that I have too many books...and I love that :) I ended up packing a box and a half worth back up to put in the attic area. And now my bookshelf looks great not triple stacked like it used to be. I guess I'm kind of a pack rat; only two books got put in the giveaway box. Anyway, I love old books and want to keep my books for my kids. It's fun when I'm reading a book and mom comes by and starts talking about reading the same book when she was a kid. It's also cool when I find a good book and suggest it to her like with Holes.

Wow, sounds like I only read kid's books...but I like autobiographies, historical fiction, some nonfiction, young adult books, children's books, Christan romances, and Cinderella variations like Ella Enchanted and Just Ella. Ok, I'm just yammering now...I'll shut up and go to bed :)

Lame attempt

Ok, so here is what's been happening. I auditioned for Cinderella and I didn't make it, neither did Angela...it's ok though, we're going to be super busy making about 50 costumes.

I'm still addicted to Dr. Quinn.

Last Friday I did an oral interpretation presentation at the library with my class partner. There were 12 people there. It was a little scary (especially since the communication department chair was there) but we did good.

I've been practicing my macro photography (without a macro lens) so don't be alarmed by all the close up shoots...I actually am sparing you from many of them. You can check my flickr if you really want to see them.

Angela and I are trying to get geared up for the craft fair, but Angela was cool enough to take some time out to make me a neat acorn necklace like the one I saw here.

I don't remember if I mentioned on here or not that I sold a zipper bag on etsy last Sunday so...hey, I sold a zipper bag on etsy last Sunday :) Then I sold another hat this Sunday on etsy! And today I sold a hat to a friend. It was made from a pair of size 16 boys shorts I thrifted for $1.

Speaking of thrifting...after I went to the post office today to mail this package...

...I hit the thrift store and got this stuff for $2.35.

Not only did I mail something today, but I got mail! I love getting mail! Mary Ann is a sweetheart and sent me some little notebooks she made :)

And now I have to write a paper...one of like five in the the next two weeks :(

Just call me Granny

I realized tonight just how odd I am. I've been drinking hot tea with honey before I go to bed each night. I'm planning on finished the quilt I've been working on over Thanksgiving or Christmas break. I call college students "kids". I too sentimental for my own good. And there's a freakin' afghan on my bed! If I read that somewhere I would swear it was talking about a grandma, not a college student.

Anyway, I went to a lecture tonight (on my own free will and ended up regretting it)...however while I was there the dean of the department asked for a business card because he wants to buy one of my hats for his daughter!

Oh....mom, I never realized how much we were alike until now. Angela and I are considering renting a table at a local craft show on the 6th. The table is only $10 and we can share it. Angela wants to sell the hats she crochets and I want to sell some of my newsboy hats, zipper bags, and some brooches I've been making from scrap fabric. This craft show endeavor made me think of the craft shows we used to go to, mom :)

I'm going to go make some tea...

youTube Love

I have a confession...I love youTube! I'm always finding cool things to watch on there. It was through youTube that I became a Hanson fan earlier this year, I got acquainted with Road to Avonlea, it's where I rewatch Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, and the Magic of Ordinary Days whenever I want to. Last week I found and watched The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants II (which was removed the very next day for copyright infringement). My latest youTube obsession is Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman! So to all of you youTube posters...thanks for posting for the viewing pleasure and obsession of others :) ...now back to Dr. Quinn...

I'm interesting!

Two weeks ago I was interviewed for the school newspaper. I was completely caught off guard by the interview...I was in the costume shop one day and Theo (a theatre teacher) points to me and said "there she is." A girl walked in and said she wanted to interview me for The Journal because she heard I was "interesting." I don't really think of myself as being that interesting, but I guess I'm a lot different from other people my age because of my crafting.... Below is the much requested newspaper article. It was located in the Q&A section of the weekly university newspaper.

"Costume Creator Turns Entrepreneur
BY NAOMI BREMER
Staff Writer

Fletcher’s mother was her sewing inspiration.

Fletcher Starts Hat Making Business

Whitney Fletcher, Mounds senior, has been busy lately—not only does she make costumes for the theatre department, but she recently started her own hat making business. Fletcher is a mass communications: electronic and print media major and a theatre minor. She will also be assisting with costume-making and fitting for the upcoming play, "Cinderella."

Q. How is your hat making business going?

A. I started making hats probably about two months ago. I made 10 in seven days, and the first few sold like hotcakes because I wore them all the time, which is great advertising. I started a shop online and sold my first hat online to a girl in the U.K. I have orders for two or three more.

Q. What do you do at the costume shop?

A. We make sure that everyone has costumes that are fitting to the play itself and fits [the actors and actresses] appropriately. Sometimes we have to make things. We had to make Klan [Ku Klux Klan costumes]—that was an adventure. Lots of scary research. We’re about to start working on stuff for "Cinderella." We are not sure if we’re going classic fairy tale or picking a fashion decade.

Q. What got you into costuming and hat-making?

A. I wanted a hat and I was too cheap to go out and buy one. My mom made all my clothes growing up because we were Pentecostal. It’s hard to find proper clothes that fit and everything, and not having much money. I’d watch her make my clothes all the time. Eventually I was like, "Hey Mom, I want to sew!" I made little pillows. A few years ago, the trend of T-shirt reconstruction came out. I started making skirts out of T-shirts. They’re really cute and fun. I made some other clothing for myself. Then I heard there was an open position up here and jumped for it.

Q. What’s the hardest part of your job?

A. There are 40-second costume changes. We helped with two [plays]. It was a little intense, but once it’s over, it’s "Hey, I accomplished it." Dress rehearsal is pretty hard. Is the director going to like it? They haven’t seen it all on stage, and stage lights make things look a little different. You just don’t really know until it’s up there, then it’s "Why did I pick that shirt?"

Q. How do you make a hat?

A. I found a generalized pattern online. I make newsboy hats. It has six basically triangular-shaped top pieces, a hat band, and the brim. I don’t usually do it in one sitting, but if I just sat down and did it, it would take one or two hours.

Q. Do you have plans to expand your hat making business?

A. I want to, but I haven’t found any more basic ideas—like how I found the newsboys on the internet. Other styles are a little harder. I tried to make the Army-style hat, but it was without any sort of pattern so I wasn’t able to finish it. But that’s how you learn!

Q. What’s the most unique costumes you’ve ever made?

A. The Klan robes and hoods. Hoods are hard to keep up—we had to starch like crazy, every night. We had three [robes] already, so we had to make four or five, and we had to make all the hoods.

Q. What do you plan to do after you graduate?

A. Probably news reporting. If not, then maybe producing for television. I interned last summer at KOTV Channel Six in Tulsa. I followed the reporters around, I got to write a few stories, did editing, sat in the booth with the producer. I ran the teleprompter one day—that was scary. I never had to make coffee! When I was in the 9th or 10th grade, there was a new news anchor at Channel Six. His name was Craig Day. It was because of watching him that I thought, "I want to go into news." When I interned, I got to intern with him. To me he was like a superhero.

“I [would] love to costume at Silver Dollar City. I love Silver Dollar City, I’ve gone there every year but one since 1996. They have adorable costumes and they also have a nighttime show where they do a variety of music, like country, rock and roll and Gospel. Those would be modern costuming, and then they have historical costumes, so that would just be so fun to do.” -Whitney Fletcher"

Keep sendin' them cards and letters...

I'm betting no one except my dad will get my title reference...but that's ok :)

Yesterday I packaged, repackaged and sent out my whimsy jar for a swap I'm in. I filled a baby food jar full of all sorts of fun stuff- including but not limited to- buttons, beads, a leather ring made from an old airplane seat, ribbon, foam stickers, a hair clip, fabric, a necklace, an embossing stamp and more. I also sent a handmade card-made using this how-to, a little note, a business card, and a cute tag from an old book page. Everything was first put into a bubble envelope...but I was worried the jar would break. So before I sewed the envelope closed I went to the post office and asked Post Office Paul what he thought. He said it would be ok, but safer in a box...so he went into the back and found a small box that something had gotten mailed to the actual post office in yesterday and he repackaged everything for me! Another reason why I love the people at the post office :)

So anyway, here are some pictures...the map envelope is the one I ended up not using. The notecard was stamped using an eraser stamp that I carved! The beautiful atlas being used for a backdrop is one I purchased at a book sale for $1 on my way home last weekend...then I dropped it carrying it to my room this week and messed the spine up a little (I wanted to cry...but didn't).

Oh and there was a write up in the university paper this week about how I make and sell hats! The reporter came to me two weeks ago and said she wanted to interview me because I'm interesting!

**If this post is a little hard to understand it's because I'm really tired**

Did you rock the vote??

Whether you voted or not or who you voted for doesn't matter now...at least not to me because I hate politics.

Just now I was reading the Daily Walk Bible and it was talking about Solomon's pray for wisdom and knowledge to lead the nation of Israel. I went back and reread the verse and it is the pray I've been praying lately, but the writer of 2 Chronicles 1:10 said it so much better. I think we should remember to say a pray for our current president as well as the president elect and every other political leader.

Give him/her the wisdom and knowledge to lead this nation properly, for who could possibly govern this great nation of yours?* -2 Chronicles 1:10 NLT

*I paraphrased a little- him/her and nation

I cried

I came home this weekend so I went to my home church this morning. I'm always running late for church and this weekend I forgot to bring home dress clothes or even a coat. So this morning I threw on some jeans, a t-shirt and the vest I made and grabbed my camo jacket. I walked into church and found out that today was the Veterans memorial service. My first thought was a sarcastic "great, people are going to think I wore camo trying to be cool for the veterans." My pastor began talking about people who sacrifice their time with family members to serve for our country. He was talking about WWII, the Korean conflict, Vietnam, and both Iraq wars; saying that there are people right now putting our country first to serve in Iraq. Putting themselves in harms way knowing that some of them will not return home. Tears were streaming down my face. This is the first time I've known someone on active duty. I'm just so thankful that God has continued to protect not only Jon but others in his group. At the end of the service I was proud I was wearing my camo in honor of those who wear it every day.

Catch up

You know you've been neglecting your blog when it's at the bottom of the recent sites list. I tend to post pictures on flickr and forget to update the blog. So...right now I'm in two swaps. A matchbox swap that just ended and a whimsy jar swap. Right now I just have pictures of the matchbox swap. We were supposed to decorate one matchbox and fill with goodies for our partner (risky since I'm not supposed to have matches or matchboxes in the dorms). I read on my partners profile on swap-bot that she likes mini sewing kits, so I ended up making her a mini sewing kit and a regular matchbox. Then I put them into a little bag I made from scrap fabric and into a recycled/recovered envelope with a little note (on a hand stamped notecard-I carved the stamp too) and a business card for my etsy shop.

I finally got around to taking some good photos of a set of 5 postcards I made a year ago. I used illustrations from Captain Horatio Hornblower in a Readers Digest book from the 1960s. (I had to resize the photos weird, so if you click on them they come up clearer.)

I've been working on some cards lately, but no photos yet.

As for "real" life...I'm writing papers, reading plays, drawing floor plans, and about to start costuming for Cinderella. I will be auditioning for it as well...but I'm not sure how well that's going to go :/ Anyway, that's about it for now...and Mary Ann rocks :)

I voted...

...absentee two weeks ago! There's one thing about voting absentee that bothers me- it HAS to be done in pencil, but when you vote in person it's done in marker. It makes me a little worried that me vote is in pencil...but I voted!

Hmm...

It's so odd to hear a commercial these days that says "batteries are included," but I heard one tonight.

Ok lets see...Monday is usually blog about the Duggars night, but the first show tonight was lame and the second was a rerun I've seen 3 or 4 other times already. Tonight I watched Dancing with the Stars at 7, One Tree Hill at 8, and 17 Kids and Counting at 9. During that entire time I switched back and forth to The Notebook. Funny story there...today me and my partner from Oral Interp were trying to come up with selections for our next presentation and we thought there might be something good in The Notebook, so I checked the book out. Then it come on tonight so now I don't have to reread the entire book because I found the parts I'm considering from watching the movie!

Tomorrow I enroll for the last time EVER!

I have a book addiction! The first step is admitting right?? :) Every time I go to the thrift store I find at least one "new" book to buy...at least it's a cheap addiction, but I'm running out of shelf space. My justification is that it's cheap, reading is educational, I can read them whenever and for however long it takes, instead of having to turn it back in to the library, and my latest reason is that I will have a ton of books for my kids to read when I homeschool in like 20 years (hopefully it won't really be that many years from now).

I want this library!

Anyway, that's my thoughts for the evening...I'm going to go finish reading One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest for my class.

More Costumes!

I love Halloween because I get to wear fun things and people don't say mean things about it...we should have Halloween once a week, or at least once a month. I wore my steampunk costume a week and a half ago for Club Alt, then Tuesday for Halloween geek night, and all day on Halloween.

The town I live in is a little weird...Halloween was postponed until Saturday because of the high school football game. So on Saturday after working the Autumn Days festival (I got to be a judge of the Salsa Showdown because one of the actual judges didn't show up!) I went trick-or-treating...for canned food. The Honors Student Association was collecting canned food for a food bank. I was tired of trying to explain to people what my costume is...so I decided to change up my outfit a little and go as a saloon girl. However I ended up going as a pirate because pirate boy wanted a pirate girl to match.

So here comes the pictures...

Giveaway winner!

According to the random number generator Becca is the winner of the zipper bag! Congrats to Becca and happy *slightly* late Halloween!

My town is trick or treating tonight because there was a football game on Friday. I will post pictures of us later. We will be trick or treating for canned food items for a local food bank. (It's really the honors kids doing it and I'm not honors, but they are my friends so I'm helping them out.) Me and a gal named Kat totally DIYed our friend an awesome pirate costume Friday night for one of the guys...it pretty much rocks!
