Comm Prom

This is mostly for mom and dad...

Tonight was Comm Prom (fun way of saying the communication department banquet). It was Hawaiian Sun Comm Prom Fun theme...sorry no photos of people dressed up. Shortly after Angela, Jordan, and I showed up I turn around and guess who's standing there...Craig Day! The guy who inspired me to go into mass communication. The guy I job shadowed and interned with last summer! He was this year's distinguished graduate recipient. It was super cool. BTW I wore the infamous pink blazer earlier in the day...so it was a close one. I film Craig talking but I he made me promise not to post it on youTube...as I'm watching now I learned that zooming on a flip isn't the best idea...but oh well.

At the banquet I won the academic achievement award for having the highest gpa of the graduating seniors and I also got an outstanding video production award (all the videos I've been posting lately are from the class I got that for).

*Sigh*

I presented my senior portfolio this morning and didn't pass out or cry or anything. That's one more thing I can take off the to-do list! I have to go by later in the week to find out what I made on it...

Thrifting!

Friday was possibly the greatest thrift day ever! Angela and I headed over to the thrift store that usually has $.50 clothes on Friday and Saturday for a couple of t-shirts for a project. Well come to find out instead of $.50 clothes it was all you could stuff into a trash bag for $5!! We ended up getting about 25 things including a really pretty formal dress, a pink trench, and a tragic 80s dress to name a few. While shopping we didn't look at sizes at all, but somehow everything we got fits! I'll put some pics up soon of some of the more fun finds :)

*SALE*

I'm having a 20% off sale on all the vintage shoes and boots in my etsy store!! I'm graduating in two weeks and I'm hoping to sell a lot of the shoes/boots before then so I don't have to pack them up when I move. So please spread the word :)

Connecting with my Native side

Just to clarify, I am not Native American...but I felt as though I am. I love pow wows, I love crafting with my hands, I try to respect the Earth, heck I wear a terrarium around my neck so I always have a piece of Earth with me.

Monday and Tuesday both I went thrifting and over the course of the two days I found three full length 100% leather skirts (one tan, two black) all the same brand. I bought all three and have been having a hay-day.

Tonight I made this necklace from the tan leather skirt, a couple of suspender clips that were lying around my room, and a wooden bead. The pendant part of the necklace was made using the tear technique that I learned about from Lanny North. After tearing it I burned the edges for a more rugged/traditional look. The suspender clips are functional (to take on and off the necklace) as well as symbolic of the metal breastplates some Native Americans tribes began to wear after the Europeans came to America.

I've always thought the phrase that something "evolved organically" about design was stupid, but now I understand it. This necklace didn't turn out like I first imagined because it evolved along the way and I love how it turned out!

Since I'm so pleased with how this came out I'm working on some other necklaces and some earrings to sell on etsy. Each piece will be one of a kind because of the tearing method I'm using. I'm super excited about this!

Earth Day

Lets see what we can do today to reduce, reuse, and recycle...and then continue doing it even after Earth Day is over... It doesn't have to be anything profound, because even the smallest things help.

I'm mailing my latest etsy sell to the UK in a recycled bubble mailer and later I'm going to make some jewelry out of all recycled materials. I'll update later with other Earth friendly things I do today.

What are you doing??

All sorts of awesome-

-ness when up on my etsy today :) I went shopping and found tons of great things that I just had to buy...which is bad since I'm working on packing up my dorm room right now. Which BTW I don't want to pack up all my vintage shoes so there is going to be a 20-25% off sale on all the vintage shoes on my etsy! More on that soon...

But anyway, here's some pictures of my latest listings...click over to Generation Gap to see more

Rook and Shadow Photoshoot

This is one of the possible cover photos for my friend Angela's book Rook and Shadow that she's writing. The photo was taken and edited (hair was darkened and the forest/river was given a greener look) by Angela. I was the model...the dress I was wearing was an 80's prom dress worn backwards (it really was that brilliant of a red). As always you can click the photo to view larger.

Two Projects Down

WooHoo...been in the lab since 9:30 am and got my two commercials done! They're a little cheesy because I came up with the idea while lying in bed really late one night...but oh well. So here they are...

I'm trying...

...really hard to keep this thing updated, but school is about to kick my butt. I graduate in 24 days and between now and then I have to read Hamlet and design costumes and make-up for three of the characters, write a comparative analysis paper for media programming, edit a 30 second and 60 second commercial, shoot and edit a final video project that has to be longer then 5 minutes, write a case study paper over Dr. Quinn, finish choreographing and memorizing our dance, take 2-3 tests, an epic kickball game to play with the Video II class, plan one banquet, attend two one, drive to Tulsa and attend OAB convention Friday, dance in the spring dance concert Friday and Saturday night...oh and finish my portfolio and convince the bigwigs that I should get a pass on senior project so I can graduate. There's a photoshoot and a music video shoot we're trying to work in and I'm wanting a trip to Branson...we'll see if that happens.

So I'm going to bed now...no class tomorrow so that means a full day of editing, writing, dance practice, then the honors banquet with Jordan because he's the president of the honors association.

Oh...today is mine and Jordan's two month-iversary!

A little bit of photo editing...

...and some cuteness thrown in :)

There have been some days with really nice weather lately, so Jordan and I have hit the park a few times. I always bring along the camera and sometimes the sidewalk chalk. I then spend the next couple of hours editing photos to put up on facebook. So here are some of the latest...as always you can click the photos to enlarge them.

Lately I've been playing a lot with layers. This first one is just a heart I drew on the sidewalk then I took this photo by holding the camera over my head to shoot down at my feet. I ended up creating two layers, turning the top one B&W, then erasing the heart so the second, colored layer shows through.

These photos were backlite taken at sunset. When taking the pictures they looked like really great silhouettes, but when I uploaded them they weren't as dark as they first appeared. I used the magic wand edge finder to cut out Jordan then copy and pasted it on top. I darkened the top layers to create a better silhouette.

This set was also taken at sunset, but I wasn't wanting the darker, silhouette look. I wanted to be able to see our faces. The first pic is the original, next is my first editing attempt where I just brightened it all without making layers but our faces ended up with lots of shadows, the last photo was edited slightly lightening the photo then cutting the two of us out and lightening us even more.

Cute aren't we?? ;)

A Few Medieval Faire Pics...Aarrg

A Little Reading

On Friday Angela, Alex, and I road tripped to the Medieval Faire. Then Saturday we headed off to McAlester to spend the rest of the weekend at Angela's house. It was a fun weekend full of pirates, photo shoot, pets, pie, and phun...ok, just trying to go with the "p" thing. Anyway, it was a really fun weekend and we got in a lot of much needed girl time.

Since the three of us are kind of nerds we spent a good portion of the time in McA reading or talking about books. We hit wikipedia and found out that J.K. Rowling (who truly has no middle name) and Stephenie Myers were both 31 when their first popular book came out. Random I know... I didn't take along a book so I ended up reading the rough edit manuscript to the book Angela is writing. (Angela is my partner in crime from the costume shop who can be seen here). I knew it would be good just because I know Angela's style...but I was amazed at how good it was! It's titled Rook and Shadow and it's a great story that has a fairy, princess, bandits, and all the things a good story should. During the car ride Angela talked about a couple of music videos we're about to start working on and we came up with the cover art for Rook and Shadow! We are going to be shooting some of it in the next week or two...I'll try to get a preliminary shot to put on here. So yeah, be prepared because in a year or two Rook and Shadow will be the next big thing.

After I read Angela's manuscript I got all nostalgic and started reading a Henry Reed book :)

There are pics of the Medieval Faire coming soon and some from the photo shoot will be up as soon as I get them from Angela.

I'm headed off to the Medieval Faire in Norman today and maybe tomorrow! There will of course be pictures soon...Angela and I are totally going dressed like pirates *argg*
