Flashback Friday...17
It all started in 1996. I was 9 years old and my family got session tickets to Silver Dollar City. I didn't really know much about the place but my dad kept telling me that it would be really fun. So we went and I had a blast! There were shows to go to, music to listen to, and rides to ride. So after spending the day at SDC my parents wanted to go see the night time show but my sis and I didn't want to; we wanted to stay in the hotel and watch TV. So they agreed to let us stay in the hotel. Mom and dad came back telling us how cool the show was and they sang all the fun music and one guy sang the song Pickup Man and they drove a pickup onto the stage. Sis and I agreed to go the next time. Well next time was the next year. So we all went to the show and loved it. There was a whole different group of performers but it was still awesome. That is when I discovered the singing group Chosen Few and have been a die-hard fan since, but that's another story.
Anyway, up until this point I didn't really listen to music didn't care about dancing or anything. But because I enjoyed the show so much I slowly began to listen to music (now I can't get enough of it). Over the next few years we continued to go to SDC and to the night time show. Then in 1999 one of the performers was a thirteen-year-old boy. I remember sitting in the bath tub one day and thinking "if he can perform in the show then I could too." I love the show so much that the only way to improve the experience would be to be in it. From that moment I decided I wanted to learn to sing and it would be my goal to get in the show. Some kids dream of being the next big star, but I just wanted to be at SDC. (I swear I'm getting to a point here.)
In 2002 Chosen Few left the show to go on tour and the format completely changed. The show went to having 10 singers and dancers. At first I hated it, mainly because Chosen Few was gone, but I began to like it to the point that I wanted to be in the show again. Only now not only did I have to keep working on my singing, but I have to learn to dance....crap. So it went down on my "Things to do" list. Since then I have continued to go to SDC every year (except one year we missed) and I go to the night time show and secretly still wish I was there. I think my friends have all figured that I gave that dream up a few years ago. But now the dream has expanded and I would totally settle for just like running the sound for the shows :)
Today's Flashback Friday is a photo of the singers/dancers from 2002 who inspired me to learn to dance and here we are six years later, and I'm finally marking it off my to-do list!

At the Park
As previously mentioned, I was sick last week...threw up 18 times in one night (we'll just leave it there). So when I was finally able to get out of bed 3 days later I wanted to get outside. I talked Kevin into going on a picnic, which is actually what we did on our 1 year anniversary and what I hope to do for our 2 year which is on May 18. Anyway, we went to Wal-Mart, bought sandwich stuff, and headed to the park armed with food, a camera, and a blanket. We had a lot of fun; the weather was nice. Then the next day we went back to the park to take pictures for the contest I entered (refer to post below). I wanted to share some of the other pictures, but I don't feel like doing any editing. So the photos are coming to you just as they came out of the camera...so here goes the cuteness...
Aww...cute.
Oh no...they found
Pretty.
*Swoon*
Got dark while we were walkin' around.
I love these pictures where Kevin looks like he's being thoughtful and thinking...
Duck spaz!
Yes I know I'm wearing the same shirt both days...but the tank top is different...
"Take a picture of me looking at the duck!"
My top model pose.
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's...giant Kevin about to crush a train on the track?!?
Ok, last one...for now :)

My style...
I just got done entering the KMart Style Showoff Contest! You may have seen the commercials for it, that's how I found out. It looked neat so I got on the internet, checked it out, and decided to enter. Kevin and I headed off to the park today, for the second day in a row, and took some pics for me to enter with. I choose this one and said something about having my own style because I like to make a lot of my clothes. It was hard to keep it down to 100 words.
<- I made the skirt. It was the 2nd thing I ever made from reconstructing t-shirts. Ex-boyfriend's shirts put to good use :)

Tent Happy

Well, it was probably a little hard at the time to see that it was a giant circus tent we were making...but now I have a new picture! One from the actual production. It's kind of crummy lighting, but it's the best I could do during the play.
So yeah, I totally sewed part of a circus tent...that's going on the resume' :)
Awareness Month
I had never even heard of autism until Clay Aiken was on American Idol, you may laugh about him, but he does a lot to help children with autism. Then because of him I ended up checking a video out of the library called Autism is a World. It's a great documentary that I would recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about autism. Then there's one person you may have heard of when talking about autism. Jason McElwain. Steve Hartman did an Everybody Has a Story segment about him and eventually everyone has talking about him. Even the president met him and asked if he could call him J Mac.
April happens to be Autism Awareness month. So spread the word :)

Flashback Friday...16
So after I had turned my lovely box into an even lovelier box of nerds (refer to last Fridays post if you missed it) the box remained in my closet for a few months. Then I was asked to participate in the children's Christmas play at my church because they needed some teenagers in it to keep the kiddos under control. I said "sure" and they said I was supposed to dress up like a toy to be in the toy shop. I went through the usual costume ideas such as a baby doll, cowgirl doll, and a few others then the light bulb came on! The day before the dress rehearsal I pulled out "the box" carefully took the paper off (and saved it for a while longer), enlarged the hole, rewrapped the box, added a crank and TaDa! I was a jack-in-the box! I know, I know it's not as cool as the box of nerds, but it's still pretty darn inventive to use the same box for two dress-up events in a row.

Note: The photo is only to show the box. These were not the actual clothes worn during the play.

I spend way to much time on Etsy
I started at A Very Mary Design, and I actually made some gift tags using hers as a guide (pictures at a later date.)

Then I did a lot of general searches for gift tags to see what other people had. I found digital paperie, This mother-daughter team make and sell a lot of classy tags.

Then I moved on to soap- I think there was a photo on the home page that caught my eye. I found oh that ashley; this young lady makes cute zipper pouches and even cuter soap.

Then there was buttons, Charlie Brown mini envelopes, and like a thousand other things. Somehow I landed on hats...the most amazing hats in the world by Noxenlux Chapeaux. I want one of the hats sooo bad, but they are way out of my price range. So I thought "I could make one" then after about 5 minutes of staring at the picture I thought "no I can't" :( My favorite is this pirate hat.

Then I found Maria Pozo. She's got some really neat corsets, spats, etc.

That's where I stopped last night, but then I jumped on Etsy again today and what is showcased on the homepage...steampunk! If you don't know what steampunk is then you need to get out more...just kidding. I discovered steampunk a few weeks ago, I think on the threadbanger forum. I googled it and tried to find out more about it. From what I understand it is Victorian meets the Industrial Revolution with a little Lolita thrown in at times. The style involves a lot of mini gears and such. So I searched steampunk and looked at all 131 pages (and there are 21 results per page...you do the math it was a lot). I found some pretty cool stuff

Ok, last one I promise. I found Bayou Salvage, two ladies who make some neat stuff from repurposed materials. They make some really cool cuffs like I have never seen before, but I'm totally going to make a few. I have a love for keys but can never seem to find any neat ones that aren't out of my price range.

Wow, this is turning into a ReaLLY long post...I hope you found some of these things as inspiring as I have. I actually had to make a separate section in my bookmarks just for Etsy because there got to be too many :)

Flashback Friday...15
Today's Flashback Friday is The Box Part 1.
My church has an event each year for Halloween, only they call it a "Fall Festival." Well in 2000 they decided to have a theme which was nerds. Everyone was supposed to come dressed like a nerd. So I thought about going with the usual plaid shirt, calculator in the pocket, glasses taped together kind of thing but decided that was to boring. I then got the idea of going as a box of nerds! So my dad found me this box and we cut holes in it and I covered it in paper and painted it to look like a box of nerds...it took awhile, but I was pretty proud of the results!

Everyone there said I should win the contest because my costume was the most original...but nope. My sister, the hit-and-run victim and a lady who dresses as a gypsy won. How unfair is that?!? But anyway, I was still proud of my costume and ended up keeping it in my closet until...(tune in next Friday to find out) Heh...
I am the newest...

A Day at Ye' Ol' Medieval Faire
After last years faire Kevin asked me if I would make outfits for us to wear and I said “sure.” However, due to lack of time over the summer (when I was planning on doing most of the sewing) and seeming to always be behind on schoolwork, I was afraid I wasn’t going to finish the costumes. So a couple of weeks ago I hit the thrift store and bought two button up the front shirts. I cut the buttons off and sewed the fronts of each shirt together almost all the way and made the rest of the front to be laced up. Then I paired my shirt with a bodice I made and the skirt I dyed over Spring Break and I made a doublet for Kevin to wear with his shirt (I didn’t get around to making pants). So anyway, it was enough of a costume for us…and some guy actually started asking Kevin some questions because he thought Kevin worked there. So I guess that means I did a good job on his outfit!
Anyway, we got up on Saturday meaning to leave around noon, but not getting on the road until almost 2. We drove to Norman and spent like 10 minutes just looking for a place to park. We ended up running into some friends just as we got there so we hung out with them for awhile. The Kevin and I say down to watch some of the SCA fighting. Then we got some drinks from McGilly Sassparilly, which is the most popular area there. They sell the drinks in these neat blueish/purple bottles and once you buy one the refills are pretty cheap. Every time someone tips one of the workers will hit the gong and yell “huzzah for the tipper!” Then we got a turkey leg and gnawed on that for a while. I always laugh about looking like a barbarian when eating a turkey leg…I have a picture to prove it, but I don’t feel like sharing it right now…
After eating we looked at the artist tents. I talked to one girl and she said she got her gypsy belt (I don’t really know how to describe it) for $12, and I wanted one so I was on a mission to find it. I found them for $25 and $30, so needless to say I didn’t get one. But we had fun looking at all the stuff. The clothes were the most amazing to look at, but boy are they a rip-off. A simple cotton peasant dress for $130?!? That’s pretty insane.
So it’s hard to write down how much fun we had, but I’m trying. I guess it all boils down to a day in the sun with the man I love seeing mermaids, mermen, pirates, gypsies, acrobatics, fighting (one actual fight as well as the scheduled events), food, wizard’s wine, and a lot of crazy interesting people.
Huzzah! One of the servers at McGilly Sassparilly. He was really nice and we ended up going through his line all three times :)
That guy is really cool, last year he carried around a giant mace
This girl dressed as a centaur or something like that last year, and looked totally neat.
This lady was funny. I asked if I could take her picture and she said "it's ok, I know you really just want a picture of the bird."
Well, I hope my writing isn't too hard to understand...it's getting kinda late. I'm trying to post a video of the acrobats, but it's taking a long time. Hopefully I'll have it up soon.

Flashback Friday...14
This weekend I am going to the Medieval Faire! I actually need to be working on Kevin's costume...but I'll do it in a little while. Last year was the first year I went to the annual Medieval Faire, and it was tons of fun. I liked looking at peoples costumes, the medieval games, and the stuff people were selling. During high school I went on a gifted trip to the Renaissance Faire, and guess what...I have pictures!

The guy in purple played the role of king or something like that and the other guys did jousting and I don't remember what the guy in all black was.
The only real difference I can see between the Ren. Faire and the Medieval Faire (being someone not very educated on the subject) is boobage. There is more boobage at the Ren Faire...so I tend to like the Medieval Faire more...
